Black Home Ownership Rates

Black Home Ownership has been declining since 2004
  • Most Recent Data: As of 2024, the Black homeownership rate in the U.S. is around 44%, significantly lower than the national average of approximately 65%.

  • Historic Gap: The Black-white homeownership gap remains wide—about 30 percentage points—and is larger now than it was in 1968, when the Fair Housing Act was passed.

  • Wealth Generation: A 20-point increase in Black homeownership would generate hundreds of billions of dollars in household wealth. For example, the Urban Institute estimated that closing the Black-white homeownership gap could result in $352 billion in cumulative Black household wealth.

Advocates Needed

The fight for stronger communities starts with safe, affordable housing and homes. Housing instability is the number one precipitator of crime. When communities have sufficient opportunities to reside and thrive, everyone benefits.
